Singapore
is a very densely populated island and city-state (4,200 people per square
kilometer) in which Chinese, Indonesian and Indian culture coexist.
As for gastronomy, Singapore is considered the
gastronomic capital of Asia. There are plenty of restaurants that offer lots of
varieties to taste for a small price: Chinese cuisine, fish, seafood,
vegetables, Indian cuisine, Malaya, Indonesia, Thai, Japanese, Korean and
Taiwandesa. But if you want something more Western, you'll also find Italian or
French food.
The hawkerses a typical meal and you can find it in
the street markets that sell specialties on the streets.
With regard
to the cultural diversity of the people who live in the country they are of
different religions: Taoists, Budístas, Muslims, Christians and Hindus.
Music and theater are very important. Special
attention is paid to the Chinese opera, coming from the Ming dynasty.
Traditions of Singapore
One of these traditions is the Ponggal, also known as the Harvest Festival, held in mid-January by the southern Indians. In this celebration the fruit of the farmers ' effort, the rice harvest and the basic food is honoured.
It also pays tribute to Surya, the sun god, in which he is believed to be the one who gives life. Among other customs, the cows are adorned and canticles are made accompanied by bells and drums in the Temple of Sri Srinivasa Perumal.
The annual Festival of the Dragon boat is a Chinese tradition that is usually celebrated in all the territories very populated by people of this origin.
